Dear Fashion lovers! Today I would like to share the interview with Christopher Ngalu a fashion designer with his brand "CREATIVE BASE" and heurges Fashion Designers to go with originality.. "I would urge other designers to go with originality,we can only get perfect by sticking to our roots and also pay attention to detail and finishing,as they say details are not details but details are what make the design" says Christopher..
Here is how the interview went:
MitindoPlus:What is your real name,Brand name and where are you
based?
Chris:My real name is Christopher Ngalu,Brand Name is
CREATIVE BASE and im based in Mzuzu-Malawi but now im working from Braamfontein
in South Africa
MitindoPlus:Do you design both menswear and femalewear,and do you
design only clothes?
Chris: I also design shoes,canvas,sandals and also
headgear,and I do both female and Mens wear
MitindoPlus:when did you start your designing career?
Chris:Originally I started it in 2012 but professionally
then Istartedin 2014
MP:What and who inspired you?
Chris: Mostly wat inspired me is the African culture and my
love for fashion,so I wanted to find a way I can portray and sell the African
culture through Fashion,That’s why my designs are very African but in a trendy
and contemporary way to fit in the current generation.
MP:ARE YOU SELF TAUGHT OR DID YOU STUDY FASHION DESIGNING?
Chris: Iam Self taught just learned from old pals who do
tailoring plus self study.I just have a huge love for art,lately Iam also going
into drawing,paintings,and pattern designing or cloth.And all my work is
African inspired.
MP:HOW HAS YOUR WORK EVOLVED SINCE YOU STARTED YOUR OWN

CHRIS:My work has evolved with experience am finding my truetouch
and knowing how to mix my other painting and drawing skills together with
fashion so its coming along good
MP:HAVE YOUR PIECES BECOME MORE APPEALING TO PEOPLE AS A RESULT
CHRIS:Yes very much,its appealing to a wider market,both
male and female loving them
MP:Are there any types of clothing that you avoid wearing?
Chris:I really don’t have anything against other types of
clothing but I prefer artisticclothes with patterns
MP:Does your approach differ when designing menswear
compared to womens wear?
Chris:Yes it does,Men’s wear
is simpler compared to female wear because women require a lot of
details in terms of design and fittings,which is not the case in Men’s wear.
MP:HOW IS YOUR WORK RECEIVED INTERNATIONALLY?
Chris:Its overwhelming and better than back home,mostly in
terms of pricing and value of work#
MP:HOW MANY FASHION SHOWS HAVE YOU SHOWCASED?
CHRIS:1major back home (MZUZU FASHION WEEK) and right now
Iam scheduled to showcase at my first international fashion week in Pretoria
(TSHWANE FASHION WEEK) which will include designers from all over Africa and
the show will be beamed on SABC so it’s a big platform
MP:WHICH DESIGNERS ARE YOUR FAVOURUTE LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL
Chris:In Malawi I respect the HOME GROWN CLOTHING and TAZMA designs, Internationally
SHERIA NGOWI and PHARRELL WILLIAMS
MP:WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER DESIGNERS?
CHRIS:I would urge other designers to go with originality,we

and finishing,as they say details are not details but details are what make the
design
