rtist and DJ Kesh has called out clothing brand Versace for designing
a similar shirt (right) to one she designed for American Apparel
(left). Undoubtedly the shirts have a lot in common even down to colour
and graphic concept, however the Versace shirt will set you back $650
while the American Apparel shirt sells for $50.
There has always been a culture of non creative popular brands at the
top ripping off talent from the underground, and successfully getting
away with it. With the rise of social media and blogs it seems that
these days this culture is really meeting its end, now that everyone has
a voice.
The young designer Kesh stated “this hurts. $650 versace rip off.
sold out in 3 sizes. what is this madness? From huge designer labels to
small boutiques to giant pop stars to fame hungry former friends, what
is this? Why can’t these companies, these brands, these people create
their own work? Why do these people think that everything that they lay
their eyes on instantly belongs to them?.“
“A friend sent an image of it to my phone. I woke up to it this
morning thinking it was another cheap Chinese rip off. Then I saw the
£440 price tag and that it was on the Selfridges website.” Kesh to the Cut
Not long ago, we saw Moschino rip off the concept of Nigerian designer Ituen Basi of which they are still profiting. So where are the real fashion police?
Would there be a day when played out labels like Versace who only
remain in the limelight due to mass marketing are made accountable for
ripping off new and fresh talent? Kesh also shared more photos showing
her displeasure and reposting screenshots of publications like Fader, E!
Online, Vogue and more who had reported the story.
Versace is yet to make a statement on the situation.
