Katia was trained as a primary school teacher, with an
emphasis in art education. She is passionate about textile art and
has attended several courses in silkscreen printing, silk
painting, batik, tie and dye, and art quilting. Previously, Katia has
used her skills
to support women’s empowerment projects in Khartoum and
Kigali.
In November 2007, Katia created the Mabinti Centre, a project of CCBRT, in Dar es Salaam. The intention of this project is to improve the quality of life for women who have received fistula treatment at CCBRT. Katia fervently believes that “one of the best things anyone can do for women is to educate and empower them”.
Katia enjoys designing basic textile prints and creating bags together with her team. The prints designed by Katia for the Swahili Fashion Show are inspired by plants of the ocean.
