To address the danger of texting while walking most especially if the users are outdoors, Apple is set to develop a walking-friendly phone through 'transparent texting' technology that will allow users watch every single step they make while texting.
According to a report by Guardian Liberty Voice, the smartphone maker has invented the 'transparent texting' technology way back in 2012, and a patent for it was file with the US Patent and Trademark Office in September of the same year. However, it was only recently when it surfaced to the public.
In a report on The New Zealand Herald, the 'transparent texting' technology will be able to alter the background of phone's applications to project live video images from the rear camera onto the device's screen, enabling users to see any obstruction ahead their way while walking.
For instance, in iMessage chat, the white background will be replaced by live video images, and the text bubbles will either become opaque or semi-opaque.
The 'transparent texting' technology can be turned on or off at the users' discretion through an in-app button, so it can be used alongside with other apps like web browsers and eBook viewers.
Stephen Ward, the application's inventor, further explained the technology: "The background within the text messaging session can continuously be a live and current video image of the view seen by the camera at any given moment."
"Consequently, the device's user is less likely to collide with or stumble over an object while participating in a text messaging session," Ward added.
Though the patent was filed almost two years ago, Apple has not yet made any announcement whether this technology will be available to iPhone users on its next iOS system update.
Apple's iOS 8 is scheduled to be released by September, which will both furnish iPhone and iPad devices technological updates.
